Frequently Asked Questions
We get plenty of questions about our lures and we want to ensure you’re selecting the best options. Here are some friendly tips and frequently asked questions

What's the best type of Loony Spoon for selected species?
-
Winter Chinook: Feeding on sand-lance, needlefish, and other small baits. Loony #3 is ideal.
-
Fall Coho: Not feeding, prefer faster presentations. Loony #3 and #3.5 are great.
-
Summer Run Chinook: Prefer slower moving baits than Coho. #3, #3.5, and #4.
-
Staging Chinook: Not feeding, prefer large, slow presentations. Try a #4 Loony.
-
Trout and Kokanee: Will hit lures up to 3” in length. #2 and #3 Loonies are ideal.
-
Large Trout: Feeding on larger baitfish like shad, smelt, and kokanee. Try #3, #3.5, and even #4 Loonies for trophy trout.
How do I choose the size of lure?
-
Match the lure size with the bait in you're area:
-
Sandlance/needlefish - #2 or #3 Loony
-
Small herring/anchovy - #3 and #3.5 Loony
-
Mature herring/anchovy - #3.5 and #4.0 Loony
-
Extra large baitfish - #5 Loony

What is the best color to use?

-
-

-
Lemon Lime, Dorado, White Knight, Purple Dawn and Watermelon
-
-

-

-

-
What speed should I troll at?
-
Trolling speed is generally a function of the lure design. Some lures are designed to troll 1.5 mph and others need 2.5 to 3.0 mph before they start to dance. So if you prefer slow trolling, match the lure to your fishing style.
-
When using downriggers, the correct speed is generally determined by the angle of your downrigger cable. One rule of thumb is to keep the cable at 45 degrees. Perhaps a little less for more lethargic fish like staging chinook and a little more for aggressive fish like winter chinook or fall coho.

Do I need flashers with the Loony Spoon?
-
Most salmon spoons need flashers to get the right action. Loony Spoons have awesome action on their own, so they work well with or without flashers.
-
We recommend you try them without flashers. You'll likely land more fish, catch bigger fish and the fight is awesome!
